Cayenne (capsicum annum) is a herb and member of the Capsaicin family of vegetables. Though first introduced to Europe in 1493 by Christopher Columbus, the benefits of cayenne was realized thousands of years before and used as a medicine in Central and South America. In fact the name is derived from the town in French Guiana on the northeast coast of South America. In North America, itself, Cherokee Indians used cayenne pepper as a stimulant.
