Book Review #2: squeaky green: the method guide to detoxing your home
Want to upgrade both your home and your life? I recommend you read and apply the advice shared in Eric Ryan and Adam Lowry's book, squeaky green: the method guide to detoxing your home. Though published last year (2008), this book is so 2010 and beyond! As stated in an introductory page: "contrary to popular belief, what you don't know can hurt you" certainly applies to most all of us, and after you finish reading, you will smile knowing that what you now know has helped refurbish your environment and help keep your family healthy.
organization counts!
The photography in this book is out of sight! So appealing and illustrative and upclose of what is being discussed. The text is divided into seven sections (living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms, kids rooms and pets); each is further sub-divided into all aspects regarding a particular part of the house and how it impacts our sustainable health. Since the book is spiral-bound, it is so easy to flip to a particular section, read and apply the information.
Content Speaks For Itself!
The information related among these pages is a goldmine of tips and facts that can literally save your life. For instance, on a page discussing water sold in plastic bottles, we learn that in the US, we spend 15 billion dollars each year on bottled water. However, though most people think the water that comes in bottled water is cleaner than tap water, that water is not subject to the same testing as tap water. "Bottled water does not have to be disinfected, is tested on average once a week for bacteria, and does not have to be filtered or tested for parasites"Furthermore, there are heavy metals in plastic bottles that break down and find their way into the water. A study by the National Resources Defense Council found that 20 percent of bottled waters tested contained traces of known carinogenss or neurotoxins. Solution? Buy a home filtration system as the authors further discuss...
Other Valuable Examples
Just listing some of the titles from other content areas leads you to understand how valuable and relevant this information may be to our lives: why do we pollute when we clean: your cleaning products might be hazardous waste; you're sleeping with dust mites. how many is debatable. what they do to you isn't;your morning routine probably exposes you to well over 100 chemicals;your baby could be teething on toxins;or you're coating your dog is pesticides (anything that involves fleas contains pesticides). Now that is just a fraction of important information that this book holds!
