Going Green at Home
President Obama will soon talk about the energy-saving advantages of going green at home. At first when considering the options and cost, the whole endeavor could look a bit overwhelming and expensive. But making your home green makes common sense--just as it does to start small and take baby steps to get there. But it will save both energy and money in the long run, and it is something you are unlikely to regret.

Green Home Improvements
First we can look at our home's lighting system. Are you using only incandescent bulbs? Did you know that the new compact fluorescent bulbs use one third of the energy and last eight times longer? A pricey upgrade are LEDs or light-emitting diodes which save even more energy and are becoming more affordable. Don't forget that special energy efficient light fixtures are also available for going green at home.Of course, another way to save big on all expenses is to simply conserve or use less. Many energy efficient devices can help you reach that goal. Besides turning off the light when leaving a room, purchasing an electrical surge protector that allows one to turn off television,DVD player and converter when not in use (they still are drawing electrical energy though not turned on). Lower the heating bill by purchasing a digital, programmable thermostat is another good start to save energy. Using a clothesline in place of a dryer might take more time, but it would certainly save money! Below is a device that will allow you to monitor your appliances and electrical devices to see exactly how much energy they hog. Becoming aware of what's going on energy-wise in your house is a smart initial step in going green at home.
Become Energy Efficient With Nature
Now let's save money by conserving water. Here's two great ideas. Save signficant money over a year's time and use less water when showering by employing a low-flow, aerating showerhead that mixs air flow into the water stream. And you save on water that is literally flushed down the toilet by the use of low-flow and dual-flow toilets.
Ever consider harnessing the power of the sun to save energy? No, I'm not exaggerating, and I think that you know what I'm hinting at: home solar energy. Technology now allows you to do just that and save lots of money on those pesky electric bills.
Look to the sun and wind for help in creatively driving down high home energy prices...

See how you can change your energy source and save significant dollars by constructing a wind generator.
Further steps, we realize, may be taken ourselves to reduce energy costs: solar thermal panels for heat and energy, tighter windows and doors throughout the house, heavier insulation in attic and walls, electricity derived from the wind and water (hydropower), geothermal (loops of pipe laid underground to source energy) or simply procuring better energy-saving, Energy Star appliances. Going green at home by definition includes several of these measures.
If you would like more information on energy saving, please consult Energy Star, created in 1992 as a joint program of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy. Any applicance with an Energy Star sticker will be 30% on the average more energy efficient than conventional models. This agency can help you save 30% or $700 on energy bills a year on average and help reduce greenhouse emissions at the same time. Visit www.energystar.gov.
