Kids Gardening Tools

Gardening is something that the whole family can enjoy - even the kids. Teaching your children at an early age what gardening is all about and how to do it properly can help them make healthier choices as they grow into adults. In order for a child to practice gardening, they will need to use kids gardening tools.

Teaching your child how to garden will be both a fascinating and memorable experience for them. They will surely want to get down and do exactly what you are doing. The only thing is that they may not be able to use the same exact tools as you. The home gardening tools you will be using will be of the larger variety and not fit for a child. They could potentially hurt themselves if they use your tools, and that is why it is important to purchase kids gardening tools. Luckily, many of the kids gardening tools you will need can be easily found online or at your local hardware store individually as well as in kits.

Something that you can talk to them about right away is watering the garden. Given that they may not know how to work the sprinkler system, you can present them with a small watering pot fit especially for them. Tell them how the water helps the plants to grow. Show them just the right amount of water to give the plants. If you show them one time, they will never forget. Another kid gardening tool that they can use is a small hand shovel. Inform them of its usage and demonstrate to them exactly how to use it.

If you check out the gardening section at your local hardware store, chances are that you will be able to find a wheelbarrow small enough for your child to push. Let them know that this is a necessary tool for spreading soil. Let them know how often this should be done. For example, when there is a big rain, tell them that you may have to spread more soil onto the garden just in case the previous was washed away. While you are telling them about how to use the wheelbarrow, also tell them about the importance of testing the soil to make sure that the pH levels are just right. Although they may not quite understand how the whole process of soil-testing works yet, it will come in handy in the future.

Another necessity to add to your kids gardening tools are miniature gardening gloves. They will need these when digging, planting, and spreading the soil. They will also want to be as much like you as possible! You can find small gardening gloves at your local hardware store and you can also order them online along with other kids gardening tools.

Other home gardening tools that will be necessary for a child and safe with the right amount of supervision are small trowels, digging forks, and bulb planters. If there is a tool that you are not sure that your child should be handling, then by all means do not allow them to use it. A lot of what your child will be using is going to depend on what their size, age, and maturity level. A toddler may very well be better off simply watering the garden and digging up small areas for planting.

Do not forget seeds! All of the kids gardening tools in the world cannot help a plant to grow without seeds. Ask your child what type of seeds he or she would like to help plant. Inform them that there are wide arrays of seeds from tomatoes, to squash, to flowers.

Teaching an Understanding of Gardening

Older children will be able to handle some of the much larger tasks such as spreading soil, and maybe even testing the soil. You will need to make sure that your child wears knee pads so their tender skin doesn't become irritated from being in the dirt. You are going to discover that teaching them how to garden now will be very beneficial for them in the future.

Children who learn gardening at an early age are able to better understand why it is done. You can tell them about how it improves the environment. You can also tell them about how organic gardening is the best option because it is safer, easier, and better for their health. Make sure that they know how to use all of the kids gardening tools properly. Demonstrate how to use them and allow them to watch you.

Ask them questions as you teach them how to use their kids gardening tools. Ask them what the tool is called and what it should be used for. It will not take very long for your child to catch on if taught properly and early on. As they grow, they will understand more about the importance of healthy eating and using natural ways of gardening. If they are old enough to read, you could also try getting them an easy learning guide to beginner's gardening. The more they know, the better they will be able to help out! To a child, having the privilege to dig, plant, and spread the soil with mom or dad is nothing but pure fun!
