Nutrition is Number 1 in Green Living

Modern day life is seldom simple. Its fast-paced nature brings with it unwelcomed stress that taxes both mind and body. To combat the demands that both job and family may place upon us, we need to receive the best nutrition. Looking to meet our nutritional needs, then, is a priority for green living.

To insure that optimal health, our bodies sometimes need assistance--especially as we age. Eating organic food, grown locally and devoid of pesticides, should become a priority if it is not already. Fresh fruits and vegetables, such as spinach, tomatoes, onions, apples, beans, green-colored plants, etc., are staples in a healthy diet. Unfortunately, buying organic, depending upon where you live, is not always possible. Local famers markets, which are ideal since the food does not need to be treated with preservatives to travel a thousand miles (average journey), are few and far between. Nevertheless, going that extra mile can pay big dividends to our health.

If you do not have access to farmers markets or experience limited access of organic food in local grocery stores, then it is essential to fortify your diet with natural herbal supplements. Herbal supplements that are natural or organic build the body's immunity against cold and disease and can even combat specific illnesses depending upon the herb.

So in answer to the question, "Why is nutrition important?" I think we can clearly see nutrition is a life changer. Driving extra miles to whole food and health food stores and developing a fitness nutrition plan is surely worth the extra effort. As is reading about nutritionwherever you may find information.... Another goal to strive for is maintaining a balance between the levels of acid and alkaline in our blood. If we get too much acid in our system, it is detrimental to our organs and the body will also store it as fat so that the excess does not do damage. This acid level (optimally 7.4 which is slightly alkaline) can be measured in both your saliva and urine with special litmus paper that can be purchased at most drugstores and pharmacies. So not only are green, organic foods loaded with nutrients, they also serve as a buffer to excess acid in our body--which can do a lot of harm. Limit the amount of meat and diary you consume as they are acid-producing (cheese especially). Please take time to read further on this at your local library as many books are available (see The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health by Christopher Vassey or The Acid-Alkaline Balance Diet by Felicia Drury Kliment).

Nutritional vitamin supplements help us maintain our health. We know that most doctors recommend a daily vitamin pill, but, in and of itself, that may not be enough. Each individual's body, and depending upon its age, may require additional supplements, such as a separate antioxidant like astaxanthin or (for men more often) selenium. If you live in a Northern climate where the sun hides most of the time, you may want to take additional units of vitamin D. Certainly, it would be wise to assess your own body's nutritional needs and there are labs available to do just that (see SpectraCell Laboratories). Dr. Hyman and Dr. Williams

In his recently-released book The Ultra-Mind Solution, Dr. Mark Hyman advocates a detoxification of the body to remove toxins, even before focusing on additional nutrition. He, like many other doctors, are now realizing that toxic chemicals have entered our food and our bodies and are responsible for the many diseases we now see. Dr. Hyman has included a special Toxins Quiz in his book that can also help your current level of toxicity. If the idea of detoxifying is new to you, this is another area to investigate soon. In addition, Dr. Hyman discusses various nutritional vitamin supplements you can take to improve brain functioning.

Finding the best products he admits has been part of his research of the last fifteen years. One source of quality supplements is Dr. David Williams. (Dr. Williams is highly recommended by Bill Henderson in his ever-so-valuable Cancer-Free: Your Guide to Gentle,Non-Toxic Healing.) Dr. Williams has added four essential fatty acids (EFAs) to his Daily Advantage formula for those of you looking for a reliable daily multivitamin source. Dr. Hyman also points out how essential Omega-3 fatty acids are to our overall health. They are obtained from wild fish and game, seaweed, algae and eggs hatched from chickens that are fed on flaxseesds and fish meal. So, they must be added to our diet and can be found in Dr. William's Daily Advantage Formula which can be accessed by clicking below.

Herbal Remedies

Another aspect of personal health to consider is the use of herbs. Though healing naturally through herbal remedies has been used for hundreds of years, many individuals believe that the pharmaceuticals that doctors prescribe are superior. However, extracts from plants, berries, roots, flowers and even bark may show suprising medicinal assistance. Herbal remedies are more often a large part of Eastern medicine rather than the West, yet their use is becoming more popular.

Please do research herbs before you start ingesting any of the more than 1,000 species. You will find that the many available commercially have great health benefits.
