Think Green in 2010

Resolved: think green--young, that is--move up and outward, open to the world before us. Let us mature as we grow and, eventually, sprout seeds of even further green.

Everything begins with a thought. Healthy thinking leads to healthy living. Our world is so often a reflection of those thoughts! Eco green living makes so much sense when thinking about changing our perplexing world and making it a better place to live and sustain for future generations.

Teaming up with like-minded people makes it easier to think green. As discussed in other pages of this website, the world begins to change exponentially as our thinking also spreads. Groups such as Greenpeace, Green America, LOHAS and Save the Earth Foundation, among others, are witness to this change. The many green businesses and innovative green products available in today's markets are also a reflection of how thinking green is taking over.

Two Examples of Thinking Green

A most refreshing organization founded by Jill Buck, a former U.S. Naval officer, on her kitchen table, is Go Green Initiative. This organization has now become a worldwide leader in environmental education and think green.

Go Green Initiative describes itself as "a grassroots environmental program that unites parents, teachers and students to create a culture of conservation on campus. The program involves students at every level and takes a comprehensive approach to help schools evaluate every aspect of their environmental impact. It provides schools simple options and tools to examine everything from recycling to energy conservation."

Can one person make a difference? Obviously, Jill has. Fifty states have adopted the Go Green Initiative--with over 1.5 million students and teachers registered in Go Green Schools. For a list of cities with Go Green Schools both in the United States and internationally, visit the website at go green initiative.

Another example of creative green thinking is a project at Bowling Green State University. Two environmental studies classes, support from Duane Hamilton, director of campus services, and a $50,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources combined to engineer an innovative go green intiative--a way to allow university mowers to run on used cooking oil from the dining halls. The project began as early as 2005 in an environmental studies class of Dr. Enrique Gomezdelcampo and now is a reality that should produce 43% reduced carbon monoxide,56% reduced hydrocarbons, and 55% reduced particulates. Congratulations to BGSU, another leader in the move toward a more Green America.

Gardening One's Self

This year we have a new President in Barack Obama who seems to understand the need to conserve and protect the environment, as we also nourish our own selves and take care of our positive thought moving into the next century.

Thinking about and taking care of our own selves is analogous to taking care of the planet. We, too, need sunshine to live, clean, clear water to drink, fresh air to breathe, proper nutrients to grow and a good foundation in order to flourish. How we think about our own selves and how we then experience the world on a daily basis is of vital importance. We must, too, garden our green thinking.
